3D printing enables jewellers to conceptualise and prototype rings, earrings, bangles, pendants...... quickly. The designers are able to create a 3D models out of 3D wax printer. The wax patterns are then encased in a plaster-like substance called investment. The investment is then heated to extreme temperatures, creating an impression / shell. The impression / shell is then filled with liquid precious metal to create the jewellery item. Today's 3D printers can manufacture dimensionally accurate wax patterns, which when processed, result in retail-grade final pieces.

3D Printing for investment casting

Investment casting also known as lost wax casting is still the most popular method to create jewellery.  3D printing is integrated seamlessly into this process by replacing the hand carved wax with a castable pattern printed on a 3D printer in wax or resin. 

Resin is harder to cast, even castable resins does not burn perfectly and easily like 3D printed wax however castable resins offers high strength and stiffness, making it more suitable for ultrafine filigree jewellery designs.
